Morning Linkage (Dec 20)

Transportation

KZ400, El Diablo by Mad Crow in Barcelona. The details on the headlight and tank make it special.

Hedton. A rare Hedlund engine crowbarred into a Norton(?) frame. Includes links to the Hedlund engine story and a flickr stream of Hedlund motos.

Odd-bits bicycle sculpture. A Monday morning smile.

Science and Technology

Yeah, sociology is a soft science but wth. Why a limited level of corruption among officials and law enforcement may be necessary to the cohesiveness of society.

Something to mull over. this map of the world shows the heavily walled national and international borders. Are we walling off the rest of the world? And can you think of other heavily fortified borders and how do they fit into this map?

Art, Images, and Design

Thomas Allen brings pulp fiction paperbacks to life by moving the subjects out of the flat plain of the cover. Artist bio.

A sample of the work of Hermann Huppen — one of the rare breed of writer/illustrators in the world of comics. Some of the Jeremiah series featured here are available in English translation.

Animation

Headless Productions. Teaser for I’m a Monster. It’s going to be a first-rate family giggle.

Morning Linkage (Sep 1)

Transportation

It’s not a bad looking bike — at all. H‑D pitches to the youngsters. No blondes allowed?

A bit of French history, a pretty lady on a bike, and a Comiot tricycle.

Ralph Steadman illustrates Hunter Thompson on a Ducati. Perfect match.

The GSX 1100 designation has been with us for a very long time. This item from the 80’s is one of the reasons why.

Science

From WSU. Why the nice guys get voted off the island. Proper title of the paper: “The Desire to Expel Unselfish Members from the Group”. Humans are so weird.

Gaming

Point and click adventure games are always popular with the “I don’t wanna shoot more stuff” crowd. Mostly they’re based on various polygon rendering engines. But Cockroach is building some thing a little different. Clay and actual model making are used to create stop-motion sequences for The Dream Machine. A haunted apartment complex… and a game for grown ups. You can play a demo or sign up for the beta test of chapter one here.

Art, Images, and Design

I have a new comic in the RSS reader. Try this one with the flying car.

Humans make unintentional art by their actions. A collection of photographs of all of the contraband brought in to the USA via Kennedy International Airport from Nov 16 to Nov 20, 2009.

Food, visual puns, and nicely done letterpress work. Letterform does a series of sweet greeting cards.

Animation

We welcome our mysterious cat-head overlords? Um, demonic, teddy bears? I have no idea but it’s fun and goes well with too many lattes. (Video 0:57)

snack time!

Morning Linage (Apr 28)

Transportation

Simple and sweet. The RD350 as cafe racer.

Rat scooters. There are a couple of homely little items in this collection that I would happily take home and shine up. And a WTF or two.

I remain unconvinced, but there are folks who think this clip from a dyno test of the MotoCzysz D1-10 proves that electric bikes will make cool noises. I think it sounds like catastrophic bearing  failure in the main generator house at Hoover Dam.

Society and Culture

Fabulously obscene blues song by Lucille Bogan from 1935 proves that modern music has always been degenerate. Shave Em Dry. NSFW

I care very much about the future of comics, cartoons, and animation. The old model of polar opposites (Marvel comics vs xeroxed ‘zines) is giving way to newer possibilities at points in between. Options that allow creators to earn a living at a smaller scale than was possible before. From wikipedia a list of “self-supporting’ web comics. Brave folks taking big risks. And some of them are damned funny too

Art, Images, and Design

I’m not sure what it means when a woman begins to paint herself as a young boy. The results of Julie Heffernan’s experiments are deep, complex, and hypnotic. Romanticism gone wrong. It’s worth spending time with her other paintings as well. (NSFW artistic nudes)

Modern hero. 38 of your favorite super heroes depicted in modern angular glory. Unfortunately they are no longer available as prints. le freakin’ sigh.

Black and White image of the day. Lyn Fontane and Alfred Lunt — laid back and louche — with a side of wiener dog.

so it goes…
